Katie McCormick Lelyveld is a strategic communications professional, experienced in exceptional executive-level relationship management with strategic collaboration and performance-driven optimization skills. Katie leverages her leadership experience in the public and private sectors to engage and motivate partners and create meaningful outcomes.
Katie currently serves as Vice President, Head of Communications and Public Affairs, for Human Longevity, Inc. (HLI). Recruited by the company’s co-founder, Katie was an early hire in this genomics-powered, technology-driven start-up to lead public affairs strategy and guide communications and development efforts.
Prior to HLI, Katie served as Director of Communications at the Joyce Foundation, a Chicago-based philanthropy that works with grantee partners to develop and advance policy reforms that promise to improve quality of life, promote community vitality, and strive for a fair society.
Katie spent several formative years serving as Press Secretary to First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House and as Mrs. Obama’s Communications Director during the 2008 presidential campaign. As Mrs. Obama’s second hire and first press secretary for their foray into the national spotlight, Katie was responsible for helping to introduce Mrs. Obama to a broad, diverse audience. During these five years, she served as a senior advisor to the First Lady, managing all media interaction for the First Lady and the First Family, and crafting image and issue area strategy that generated approval ratings among the best in history for First Ladies. Her team led the formulation and launch of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! and Joining Forces initiatives, among other national engagement programs and events.
Ms. McCormick Lelyveld has worked in corporate, crisis and non-profit communications for The Glover Park Group, Edelman Public Relations, and The Harbour Group. She served as Deputy Communications Director to the John Kerry for President Campaign, and started her career in the office of First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. She is a past board member of Urban Alliance which empowers under-resourced youth to aspire, work, and succeed through paid internships, formal training, and mentoring.
Katie McCormick Lelyveld graduated from Georgetown University. A native of Chicago, she lives in La Jolla, California, with her family.
