Synthetic Audiences: Real-Time Stakeholder Simulation for High-Stakes Communications
University of Southern California, University Communications
The University Communications team at the University of Southern California (USC) has transformed market research by creating synthetic audiences – AI-constructed personas that simulate how real stakeholder groups interpret language, evaluate credibility, and respond to messaging. Using ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, USC developed a custom GPT that synthesizes publicly available demographic, psychographic, and behavioral data into dynamic virtual stand-ins capable of reacting to draft communications in real time. The synthetic audiences are trained to evaluate every message against five dimensions: predicted reception (positive, neutral, or negative), trust and credibility signals, clarity and comprehension, specific objections likely to emerge, and probability of desired action. Once built, these audience simulations become institutional assets—essentially virtual focus groups—reusable across campaigns and workflows without additional cost or setup time. USC has deployed this technology across a variety of departments and initiatives, making market research in higher education more accessible and insightful than ever before.
